Ahold, the Dutch food retailer, on Monday said it had seen no evidence of consumers “trading down” to cheaper products in the US or the Netherlands at the start of this year as it reported fourth-quarter profits that beat expectations.
Although the group, which runs several US chains as well as the dominant Dutch supermarket, shied away from making any predictions for 2009, it painted an upbeat picture of trading conditions as the recession bites.
