The Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), Brazil’s government-owned development bank, has for many years been the main and often the only source of long-term investment finance for the country’s private sector.

Often criticised on the grounds that its subsidised interest rates discourage the formation of other funding sources, it has nevertheless played a central role in the development of capital markets and of the banking sector.
