Stocks in London struggled for momentum on Thursday, despite merger rumours and better-than-expected results from telecoms stalwart BT Group.

Gains were only modest following as Wall Street indices got off to a slow start. In early trade in New York the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were both 0.1 per cent lower
