ANC powers on to emphatic victory

The governing African National Congress was on Friday on course for an emphatic victory in South Africa’s general election, propelling Jacob Zuma, its leader, to the presidency.

With more than half the votes counted, the party appeared on course to achieve a two-thirds majority, with the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, second with 15 per cent of the vote.
