Yasuo Fukuda: Dogged diplomat anxious to make a successful host

Yasuo Fukuda, 71, who became prime minister last September following the sudden resignation of Shinzo Abe, was determined not to miss his moment in the limelight.

But, as his popularity collapsed to the low 20s in the first few months of his tenure, premature political demise seemed a real possibility. There were those who whispered he might not make it to Hokkaido.
