Iraqi lawmakers on Wednesday approved by a slim majority a law that lays out a mechanism for forming autonomous federal regions.

The decision was taken in a session of parliament boycotted by its main critics and is likely to cause further acrimony over an issue that has polarised Sunnis and Shia for much of the last year.
