Pekka Sutela is a shy and friendly man given to explosions of enthusiasm for a fascinating sideline to his official job as head of the Bank of Finland’s Institute for Economies in Transition.

Eschewing stodgy trade statistics in favour of “novels, memoirs, chronicles and non-scientific biographies”, he has opened a door on the complexity, tension and occasional farce that underpins economic relations between Finland and Russia.
