Prickly president set to take pragmatic step

Being a Czech politician is not usually a recipe for gaining international fame, but Vaclav Klaus has long used his mainly symbolic post as a cockpit for stirring controversy, and he is again the centre of Europe’s attention as he decides whether to sign the Lisbon treaty.

The Czech president first refused to sign until the Irish referendum result and now he insists that he will not act until the Czech constitutional court rules on the treaty.
