Crack down on empty property

The chancellor announced on Wednesday that he intended to crack down on generous tax relief for commercial property if the premises were left empty because this pushed up rents in areas where demand was highest.

He announced reforms to the system in line with representations from the Federation of Small Businesses. In future the government will restrict the tax relief available for empty industrial properties to six months, and for empty offices and retail to three months. There will be special exemptions for charities.
