Across the ideological spectrum, the US defence budget announced a week ago has been reviled for a continued emphasis on the procurement of huge, technologically ambitious weapons systems at the expense of “boots on the ground” and improvements in existing equipment.
At a time when the rest of the federal budget is being restrained to accommodate tax cut extensions, the Pentagon will be getting an 8 per cent increase in weapons expenditures for a total of $84bn or more.
