Smiths combats ‘tough’ year with cuts

Smiths Group, the engineering conglomerate, said underlying profits fell sharply in the year to July, but cushioned the blow with higher-than-forecast cost savings and strong cash generation.

“It’s been a desperately tough year,” said Philip Bowman, chief executive. “But we’ve stuck to our plans to take costs out and . . . we are better placed to benefit when the economy rebounds.”
