Creation of ‘bad banks’ on agenda for EU

On Tuesday European Union finance ministers will consider how to remove toxic assets from the balance sheets of banks and restore the credit flows that are vital to extracting Europe from recession.

Meeting in Brussels, ministers will study the possibility of creating “bad banks”, to which financial institutions would transfer their contaminated assets in order to rebuild confidence in credit markets.
