Demand for something new was a test too far

Although largely forgotten, Hillary Clinton’s campaign arguably hit its nadir in early February when it staged a “virtual townhall” to much fanfare.

The event, which was broadcast on the Hallmark channel at great expense, borrowed from Mrs Clinton’s widely mocked “conversation with America” with which she had launched her campaign website a year earlier.
