Israel’s weekend assault on the Gaza Strip marked the latest, bloody twist in a cycle of violence that started almost two months ago.

Back in early November, Israel and Hamas were entering the fifth month of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that was due to last until December 19. Most officials and analysts in Gaza and Israel expected the truce to be prolonged, and possibly even to be expanded to cover the West Bank as well.
