The case for fusion over fission

Nuclear fusion is again attracting attention as a clean alternative to nuclear fission.

A team at the University of California at Los Angeles reports, in this week's Nature, experiments that suggest it may be possible to demonstrate fusion on a small scale and under conventional laboratory conditions. Such claims are always made in the shadow of the inconclusive "cold fusion" experiments of 16 years ago, but Brian Naranjo and his team make an altogether more convincing case.
