Matalan discounts win high street approval

Bargain-hunting shoppers have boosted sales and profits at Matalan, the privately owned discount retail brand.

Matalan, which was taken private by its founder and controlling shareholder John Hargreaves amid acrimony with institutional shareholders and non-executive directors three years ago, also said it was unlikely that it would ever return to public ownership.
