Brown pledges to review troop numbers

Gordon Brown on Monday pledged to review troop numbers in Afghanistan after the presidential elections in an effort to head off army calls for a permanent increase in forces.

Addressing a sombre House of Commons, the prime minister insisted that the armed forces had the right equipment and the manpower to “do the job” in Afghanistan through what would be a “very difficult summer”.
