Thailand considers preventive detention

Thailand is planning to strengthen its national security laws which could allow the preventive detention of terror suspects. Civil rights activists say such a law could be abused and used to stifle public dissent.

Thaksin Shinawatra, the Thai prime minister, said he wants to make legal changes to boost police and other security forces' efficiency in the battle against persistent violence in its Muslim-majority southern provinces.
