The deadweight of housebuilders’ landbanks is not solely a problem for shareholders.

The UK is facing a chronic shortage of housing. The Local Government Association estimates that there will be 5m people on council housing waiting lists by next year, and the government has a target of producing 240,000 new homes a year or 3m homes by 2020.
