Surprise fall in jobs fuels US recession fears

US employers cut jobs by the most in five years last month, increasing the odds that the economy has fallen into recession.

The downbeat report raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will be forced to slash interest rates further to avoid a more serious downturn. President George W. Bush said he was “concerned”, adding it was clear the the economy had slowed.
