Glenn Allen, pastor of New Life Family Worship Center in Fayetteville, near Atlanta, clutches a microphone at the front of his 150-strong congregation looking as much like a talk show host as a man of God.

His sermon, like those of many black preachers across the South, is part-worship, part-motivational pep talk, with an in-house church band providing backing music.
