Brazil assesses impact of currency crisis

Contradictory signals emerged yesterday on the extent of the damage suffered by Brazil's companies and banks caused by failed bets on the domestic currency, a crisis dubbed "Brazilian subprime".

Problems have mounted during the Brazilian real's sharp devaluation against the US dollar over the past few months.
