Asian shares down on discouraging data

Asia-Pacific share prices were lower as data showed Japanese manufacturers were less confident about their business prospects and that US house prices were dropping quickly.

Trading stagnated on many stock markets ahead of Christmas Day. The FTSE Asia Pacific index was 1.1 per cent lower at 161.74 by the time the Tokyo market closed, meaning it has lost more than 44 per cent in value so far this year.
