It has been dubbed the pub industry's equivalent of David versus Goliath.

And this week, Goliath - in the form of the country's biggest tenanted pub operators - was dealt a stinging blow after a parliamentary inquiry called for the Competition Commission to launch an investigation into the "tied" business model used by pub companies such as Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns.
