President George W. Bush yesterday sought to change the subject from the deteriorating situation in Iraq by focusing on the strength of the US economy just two weeks before America goes to the polls in mid-term congressional elections.
Citing strong US job growth and improving wages, Mr Bush dismissed polls that suggested the Republican party was on course to lose control of the House of Representatives on November 7 and possibly also the Senate. The president will today give a speech in Florida on the economy.
