Ben BernankeReutersThe credit crunch provided the first serious test of Ben Bernanke’s ability as a financial crisis manager, and his ability to operate under fierce public and political pressure.

The Federal Reserve chairman – who took over from Alan Greenspan early last year – had begun to develop a reputation as a good judge of monetary policy in a more normal environment. But this was the first time he – and many of his colleagues – had to deal with severe market disruptions.
