This wasn't supposed to happen. Crude oil hit new highs yesterday, reaching above $85 per barrel on Nymex. With the US driving season now over, a bad hurricane season avoided and the onset of the winter central heating season still in the future, oil prices should be enjoying a seasonal decline.

The tension between Turkey and Iraq appears to explain why oil is rising.
