As Pakistan’s military heads towards likely victory over Taliban militants in the northern Swat valley, Noor Khan is desperate to get an update on the number of “butchers” arrested or killed from his homeland.

This week’s announcement that troops had killed a militant known as “butcher” revived deeply unpleasant memories for the 30-year-old businessman from Swat, who fled the region in the wake of the fighting.
