How private a matter is employee’s illness?

I am the managing director of a medium-sized business and have recently recruited a member of staff who has a history of suffering from severe depression.

However, he is a very capable individual and is perfect for the role I have in mind. His illness is managed with medication. I would be interested to know a little more about his illness so that as his employer, I am able to provide any necessary support or make reasonable provisions.
