Scotland poised to outlaw cut-price alcohol

Scotland aims to become the first country in Europe to set a minimum price for alcohol, the Scottish government announced on Monday.

The decision by the minority Scottish National party administration to go ahead with plans to curb alcohol abuse drew a furious response from the drinks industry. Scotland, which three years ago became the first part of the UK to outlaw smoking in public places, also proposes to stop cut-price drinks offers.
