Run of gains ends in spite of upbeat data

European markets turned negative on Thursday, snapping five consecutive sessions of gains.

This was in spite of data showing the pace of economic contraction in the eurozone slowing markedly – purchasing managers’ indices jumped more than expected to their highest level in eight months. The improvement in Germany and France was particularly sharp.
