Men's clubs relieved over vote proposal

When the government outlined details of the proposed ban on smoking in public, England's working men's clubs had cause to breathe a sigh of relief.

Instead of the outright ban on smoking mooted for pubs and restaurants that serve food, the white paper on health allowed private clubs the option of balloting members on whether to introduce a ban or not.
