Thailand's ruling coalition appeared yesterday to have won key by-elections, bolstering its claim to power and reducing the threat of more political turmoil.

According to an unofficial count released last night, coalition parties loyal to Abhisit Vejjajiva, the new prime minister, won 20 of the 29 seats contested, defeating what could have been a real threat to his 35-seat majority in parliament.
