Their products help prevent your car getting dirty and the colours fading from your child's sun hat. But, in spite of the usefulness and ubiquity of their products, many of Europe's speciality chemicals companies are in trouble.

Margins have shrunk as smaller and medium-sized producers have found themselves caught between higher energy and raw material prices and customers, often multinationals many times their size, unwilling to accept price rises.
