US service sector contraction slows in June

The US service sector shrank in June for the ninth consecutive month, albeit at a slower pace than before, as activity in businesses such as banks and retailers continued to decline.

The Institute for Supply Management’s index of non-manufacturing businesses, which accounts for around 90 per cent of US economic activity, rose to 47 per cent in June from 44 in May. Any number under 50 indicates a contraction.
