In a darkened room in Farnborough in the UK, a group of men and women are glued to a bank of computer screens, watching a small robot inspecting a suspected explosive device.

At the same time, small, pilotless aircraft controlled by a team in California are providing surveillance of suspicious vehicles, while F-15 fighter jets circle overhead.
