Civil service to drop retirement age

The civil service is to abolish its retirement age entirely from April next year, Sir Gus O’Donnell, the cabinet secretary, said yesterday.

Announcing that government departments would become “completely retirement free,” he said the decision in principle announced last year for lower grades would now be applied to the 3,000 people in the senior civil service as well.
