Northgate has slowed its expansion into another European country and now expects a "more modest" investment because of the challenging economic conditions.

The UK and Spain's biggest van hire company expects current-year profits to be similar to last year's because of the weaker used vehicle market but said its flexible rental model would, in the present difficult climate, appeal to customers unwilling to make long-term financial commitments.
