Stocks tumble as inflation fears grow

Global stock prices tumbled yesterday as US credit losses mounted and oil prices remained at levels that recalled the highinflation days of the late 1970s.

The soaring price of crude has sent the average price of unleaded petrol above £1 a litre in the UK for the first time, according to Catalist, a consultancy. The average price of diesel rose to 103.3p a litre, it added.
