By common consent, the US government has been happy to run a “weak dollar” policy since the bursting of the dotcom bubble in 2000.

But legislation currently passing through both the Senate and the House of Representatives could usher in a period of dollar strength, pushing the greenback permanently higher by 10 per cent, in the opinion of ABN Amro.
