England and Wales birth rate at 35-year high

The fertility rate has climbed to a 35-year high, as a surge in births takes the population in England and Wales close to the elusive “replacement rate” at which births and deaths cancel each other out over a lifetime.

The increase in the birth rate will boost the economy and public finances in the long term, by increasing the future pool of workers who will sustain rising numbers of pensioners.
