Indonesia plans to speed up the deployment of a tsunami warning system after Monday’s disaster in which more than 500 people were killed following a 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake, officials said yesterday.

Without a system in place to relay international warnings about potential threats, let alone one to detect tsunamis, Indonesian authorities could do little on Monday to warn people along the southern coast of Java of the impending danger.
