In New York William Ackman, founder of hedge fund Pershing Square Capital, will on Tuesday try to show how McDonald’s could super-size returns to shareholders.

In recent weeks, Mr Ackman has unnerved the fast-food chain with proposals that it sell off 65 per cent of its company-owned restaurants and restructure its vast real estate assets.
