Shoemaking: A prized industry has travelled north-east

They are one of Brazil’s most basic and typical products, made in the poorest region of the country. At the same time they are one of its most prized exports.

Production of flip-flop sandals is concentrated in the north-east, along with a significant part of Brazil’s shoe industry. The country ranks as the third largest producer in the world after China and India, and the fourth largest exporter behind those countries and Italy.
