Homeware and DIY sales are forecast to have soared over the bank holiday weekend as the frozen property market prompts more Britons to revamp their homes rather than move – giving a welcome boost to one of the worst-hit retail sectors.

Easter is traditionally the busiest period for the sector’s retailers, as the promise of better weather prompts homeowners to use days off to do jobs in the house and garden.
