Smithfield Foods: Polish piglets become political

When Smithfield Foods bought faltering Polish meat producer Animex for $55m in 1999, senior management looked at Poland and pictured Iowa.

The idea was that Poland, with its large agricultural sector, cheap land and cheaper labour, could form the basis for a highly industrialised meat production system based on the vertically integrated American model that would be able to supply much of the European market.
