At least 10,000 workers downed tools at five of South Africa’s World Cup football stadiums on Wednesday as Jacob Zuma was confronted by the most serious industrial unrest since he became the country’s president in May.

The dispute, which also affects a number of other high ­profile infrastructure projects, is over a 13 per cent wage demand that involves up to 80,000 workers.
