Xstrata releases letter to push Anglo American towards merger

Xstrata stepped up the pressure on Anglo American to join merger talks yesterday, publishing the letter it sent to the rival miner outlining $1bn of cost savings and other synergies that could be made.

The move came as it emerged that Cynthia Carroll, Anglo's chief executive, was in Brazil, the home of Vale, a miner considered a rival suitor by some analysts.
