Unifil’s changing role

In the tense weeks that follow the UN-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon, as Israel begins to withdraw its forces from the south, the role of Unifil, the United Nations force in the region, is set to become increasingly important.

The UN ceasefire resolution called for an end to the war between Israel and Hizbollah militants that has claimed over 900 lives, and authorised up to 15,000 UN peacekeepers to help 15,000 Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon, which was under Hizbollah‘s control, as Israel withdraws.
