Japanese shares continued to lose ground in thin trading on Thursday, with sentiment battered by news of further big losses at Merrill Lynch and a stronger yen.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 0.5 per cent to 16,284.17 while the broader Topix index ended the day down 1 per cent at 1,548.07.
